Not all mohair wool is created equal

Anyone who wants to order mohair wool today and doesn't have a store nearby where they can feel and test everything has to order mohair wool online. But the product descriptions are often confusing: Kid Mohair, Super Kid Mohair, Baby Mohair… What are the differences? Similar to alpaca, the wool of the Angora goat, which provides the raw wool for the popular mohair yarn, is divided into different categories (Super Kid, Kid, Young, Adult) depending on fiber fineness and softness. The younger the animal, the finer and softer the fiber and thus the mohair wool that is later spun from it for knitting.

Mohair wool and pilling

Are you looking for a mohair yarn that is soft and yet doesn't pill after the first wear? Then it's important to choose a high-quality version: The finer the individual mohair fiber, the softer it is. The longer the individual mohair hair, the less pilling there is. Fibers that are both fine and long are rare and therefore expensive. Incidentally, fiber fineness is measured in microns. The finest mohair category, Super Kid Mohair, has less than 24 microns, while Kid Mohair has 24-29 microns. Mohair wool with thicker fibers, i.e., a higher micron count, is perceived as rather scratchy by many people. The Angora goat probably originated in Turkey (Ankara region), hence the name. Today, South Africa is the largest producer of raw mohair wool and spun mohair yarn.
