Mohair wool

The curly, silky hair of the Angora goat
Mohair refers to the hair of the Angora goat. The younger the animal, the finer the hair, and so the hair of the baby goat (kid) is the finest. This natural fiber is the lightest textile fiber and very delicate. Therefore, kid mohair is usually blended with a stabilizing fiber such as silk, wool, or polyamide. The fiber is very warm, hardly pills, and is beautifully fluffy. Ideal for airy scarves and shawls. Interestingly, the largest mohair farms are located in South Africa, which is also where we source most of this luxurious, fluffy wool.

Not all mohair wool is created equal.

Anyone wanting to order mohair yarn today who doesn't have a shop nearby where they can touch and test everything has to order mohair yarn online. But the product descriptions are often confusing: Kid Mohair, Super Kid Mohair, Baby Mohair… What are the differences? Similar to alpaca, the wool of the Angora goat, which provides the raw wool for the popular mohair yarn, is divided into different categories (Super Kid, Kid, Young, Adult) depending on fiber fineness and softness. The younger the animal, the finer and softer the fiber and thus the mohair yarn that is later spun from it for knitting.

Mohair wool and pilling

Are you looking for a mohair yarn that's soft yet doesn't pill after the first wear? Then it's important to choose a high-quality version: the finer the individual mohair fiber, the softer it is. The longer the individual mohair hair, the less pilling. Fibers that are both fine and long are rare and therefore expensive. Fiber fineness is measured in microns. The finest mohair category, Super Kid Mohair, has a micron count of under 24 microns, while Kid Mohair has a micron count of 24-29 microns. Mohair wool with thicker fibers, meaning a higher micron count, is often perceived as scratchy. The Angora goat likely originated in Turkey (the Ankara region), hence its name. Today, South Africa is the largest producer of raw mohair wool and spun mohair yarn.
