Mercerized cotton

Some cotton yarns are mercerized, meaning they undergo a surface treatment that makes the cotton more dimensionally stable and shinier. In this process, the fibers are dipped in a special lye solution and then stretched. This causes the fibers to lie close together and parallel, resulting in good light reflection and a beautiful sheen. If you're looking for cotton yarn for knitting or crocheting, mercerized cotton is a great choice. These yarns are particularly well-suited because they have an elegant look and make knitted items shimmer almost like silk.
