Our Plain Cashmere is a woolen yarn and, at 16.5 microns, is among the highest quality cashmere yarns in the industry. It originates from the high mountain regions of Mongolia. It is spun and dyed in Italy.
Cashmere is one of the softest, finest fibers in the world: cashmere hairs have a fiber fineness of 15 - 19 microns - the lower the micron number, i.e. the thinner the individual fiber, the softer.
Woolen yarns, unlike the more compact worsted yarns, are characterized by their airy and voluminous nature, making them very light and economical. Experienced knitters swear by woolen yarns because they produce a beautiful, slightly blurred stitch pattern and are also wonderfully suited for multi-colored knitting projects.
The world's most prestigious fashion labels source the cashmere yarn for their knitwear from our Italian supplier. The yarn is virtually unparalleled in its softness. We were particularly impressed by the color palette, with its subtly heathered, muted shades.
There is one small challenge with this rare yarn: Because it is primarily produced for machine knitting in the fashion industry, it arrives to us on cones lightly waxed. We wind the precious material into skeins and then wash them very carefully. Despite this, some grease remains in the yarn, so it may look a little plain at first glance and not yet have fully developed its fluffiness. We recommend washing the finished knitted item on a wool cycle at a maximum of 30°C and then tumble drying it for 30 minutes at 80°C. The result is a fluffy yet pill-free wonder!
