We now also offer our popular Baby Alpaca 10/2 yarn in practical 25g skeins, for example for multi-colour knitters who like to combine and only need small quantities per colour. The 25 colours are harmoniously coordinated and can of course also be combined with the 50g skeins. In addition, we are daring to offer - quite untypically for the usual BC colour palette - the neon colours that are back in fashion. Everything from the raw wool to the processing and spinning takes place directly in Peru.
Prejudices against alpaca yarns can easily be dispelled with this yarn. "Baby Alpaca 10/2" from BC Garn is not only cuddly soft, but with 22 to 24 microns (micron is the measure for the average thickness of a hair) it has the second finest fibre category for alpaca yarns. Only the so-called Royal Alpaca with 19.5 to 22 microns is softer. This even makes alpaca sceptics weak. This Baby Alpaca has the perfect strength for feather-light pullovers and jackets or fine cuddly blankets and scarves.
The explanation why this alpaca yarn does not scratch is simple: Thicker hairs twisted into a thread stick out sideways - corresponding yarns are perceived as scratchy. Fine hairs, on the other hand, nestle "into the thread", do not stick out and are therefore very soft. Simple physics: the finer the hair, the softer the wool.
More information on alpaca wool can be found under "FAQ - frequently asked questions & answers".
We are often asked why we do not offer GOTS certified alpaca wool. The answer: So far, there are very few alpaca farms that are certified. Alpaca farms, unlike sheep farms, are usually very small and the animals roam relatively freely in the mountains. Monitoring the pastures according to GOTS guidelines is therefore difficult and too expensive for small alpaca farmers. However, the production of an undyed alpaca version with a GOTS certificate is planned for the future.
