We now offer our popular Baby Alpaca 10/2 yarn in convenient 25g skeins, perfect for multi-colored knitters who like to combine colors and only need small amounts of each. The 25 colors are harmoniously coordinated and can, of course, also be combined with the 50g skeins. Furthermore, we're taking a bold step and, quite unusually for the usual BC color palette, are offering the currently trending neon colors for the first time. From the raw wool to the processing and spinning, everything takes place directly in Peru.
Prejudices against alpaca yarn can be easily dispelled with this yarn. "Babyalpaca 10/2" from BC Garn is not only cuddly soft, but with a fiber size of 22 to 24 microns (a micron being the measure of the average thickness of a human hair), it boasts the second-finest fiber category among alpaca yarns. Only the so-called Royal Alpaca, with 19.5 to 22 microns, is softer. This will even win over alpaca skeptics. This baby alpaca has the perfect weight for feather-light sweaters and jackets, or even delicate cuddly blankets and scarves.
The explanation for why this alpaca yarn isn't scratchy is simple: Thicker hairs, when twisted into a thread, stand out to the sides – these yarns are perceived as scratchy. Fine hairs, on the other hand, lie flat within the thread, don't stand out, and are therefore very soft. Simple physics: The finer the hair, the softer the wool.

We are frequently asked why we don't offer GOTS-certified alpaca wool. The answer is that there are currently very few certified alpaca farms. Unlike sheep farms, alpaca farms are generally very small, and the animals roam relatively freely in the mountains. Monitoring the pastures according to GOTS guidelines is therefore difficult and too expensive for small alpaca farmers. However, we do plan to produce an undyed, GOTS-certified alpaca wool in the future.
