Tussah silk is a so-called wild silk, as it is obtained from the cocoons of wild oak silkworms – which have yet to be successfully bred in captivity. The caterpillars are allowed to leave the cocoon before it is processed into silk, thus classifying tussah silk as "violence-free." In skein, it initially feels a bit stiff, but after the first (hand) wash of the knitted garment, it changes its feel, becomes soft, and develops excellent breathability.
Silk is known for its stability and its ability to enhance the brilliance of colors. For this reason, it is suitable not only for hand knitting, but also for knitting machines, weaving, and embroidery. BC's Tussah Tweed, with its small nubs, is a yarn with character and high recognition value. Lace patterns are particularly well showcased with this yarn.
The yarn is spun and dyed in Italy by a spinning mill that primarily produces for the textile industry. However, in collaboration with our colleagues in Italy, we have created an ideal hand-knitting yarn with this silk tweed, a truly unique product.
