Some cotton yarns are mercerized, meaning they undergo a surface treatment that makes the cotton more dimensionally stable and shinier. In this process, the fibers are dipped in a special lye solution and then stretched. This causes the fibers to lie close together and parallel, resulting in good light reflection and a beautiful sheen.
