Sheep wool is by no means all the same. The range extends from the finest merino wool with less than 18 microns (this refers to the fineness of the individual hair - the lower the value, the finer) to smooth, shimmering varieties such as that of the Bluefaced Leicester sheep or soft, curly wool such as that of the Masham sheep, all the way to the rustic, crimped wool of Shetland sheep. Each wool has its advantages and very own characteristics. In addition, it also plays a role whether the raw wool is combed (worsted spun) or carded (woolen spun) before spinning. In carded wool, the wool remains fluffier, the individual fibers lie criss-cross in the thread and thus have more air pockets. It is therefore very light and yields a lot. Also ideal for multi-color knitting. Combed yarns are more compressed, the fibers lie parallel, which reflects light better, so the wool has a slight shimmer. Why does wool felt so easily? What makes it machine washable? Why do we have hardly any superwash treated wool in our assortment? Why is organic wool generally not machine washable? You can find answers to these questions under Service, Tips & Information on Material Science Virgin Wool.
