Cashmere

Scarce and Precious

Cashmere derives from combing cashmere goats, which live among others in China. The longer and finer the fibre, the better. You can only harvest about 150g of wool from one animal. This wool is then further separated into finer and thicker fibres, which explains why the harvest from one animal of the finest fibre is so little and the price so high. Cashmere is as soft and fluffy as angora, but not pilling as much as the fibre is much longer than that of angora.

Not all cashmere wool is created equal.

Anyone wanting to buy cashmere wool who doesn't have the opportunity to feel and try it out in a store has to rely on product descriptions, which isn't easy: Is there a difference between "Kashmir" and "Cashmere-Wolle"? No, the first is the German spelling, the second English. What animal does cashmere wool come from? The cashmere goat, which lives predominantly in China and the Himalayas. Are there different qualities of cashmere? Yes!

Cashmere fibers: fineness and hair length

Are you looking for a cashmere yarn for knitting that's incredibly soft yet won't pill after the first wear? Then it's important to choose a particularly high-quality version: The finer the individual cashmere fiber, the softer the cashmere wool. The longer the individual cashmere hair, the less pilling. Fibers that are both fine AND long are rare and therefore expensive. Fiber fineness is measured in microns – the finest cashmere is around 14.5 microns. Fiber length is classified in staple length. The staple length of cashmere ranges from 35 to 90 mm.

How do you make cashmere fluffy?

Do you want to knit a cashmere scarf or sweater? And would you like your knitted pieces to be as fluffy as possible? Is fluffy cashmere particularly high-quality? No! High-quality cashmere wool is not naturally fluffy. What appears as a soft fuzz on the surface of a ball of yarn is either shorter fibers that have been brushed out or softened with fabric softener, or the yarn was brushed after spinning. Both of these can lead to pilling relatively quickly. Long-staple, fine cashmere only becomes softer gradually with knitting and washing (hand wash, gentle liquid soap, lukewarm water, gently fluffing, no rubbing). You can even put the finished knitted piece in the dryer for a short time for an extra fluffy result.
